Coaching vs. Therapy

There are some similarities and important differences between my brand of coaching and psychotherapy in terms of their treatment and focus. I hope this helps you to make a more informed decision about what’s right for you.*

*Please note, this information is not intended as medical advice. If you’re suffering from a psychological disorder or are experiencing a mental health crisis, you should speak with a doctor as soon as possible.

I am trained and open to sitting with your feelings, without judgement or overreaction.

You can express how you’re feeling in a gentle, encouraging and entirely confidential environment.

I can receive them and support you in processing them.

In this way, my coaching practice can be similar to psychotherapy.

Differences In Treatment

  • Psychotherapists treat mental illness. Health problems like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or personality disorders are best dealt with in a clinical setting.

  • I coach clients in a confidential, non-judgmental setting to work through unhelpful behaviors, limiting beliefs and perceived obstacles.

  • I treat the safety and well-being of my clients very seriously. Therefore, if and when I observe behavior that could suggest the need for clinical support, I will discuss my observations in a sensitive manner and offer options.

Differences In Focus

  • Psychotherapy focuses on healing through a deep understanding of your past and its impact on the present.

  • The focus of my coaching sessions is on the steps you take in the present to achieve what you want.

  • Along the way, I will provide insight, accountability, motivation, new ideas, action plans and moral support.

Trust Your Instinct

Ultimately, the skill and dedication of the practitioner you work with will greatly determine the results you can achieve. The best way to decide is to put yourself out there and see what feels right.

During a consultation with me you’ll discuss what you want to achieve and I'll provide examples of how I can help, or offer alternative support options.
